What is SEL?
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to recognize and manage their emotions, demonstrate care and concern for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions, handle challenging conditions constructively, and much more.

Partnering with Schools and Families
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is crucial for young children, as it provides a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. Teaching social skills and emotional literacy in the classroom, or other small setting, builds vocabulary and language, as well as the skills to handle everyday situations in a healthy way. SEL lessons help children learn to self-manage and handle their emotions, as well as solve conflicts, show respect, and build relationships. Learning and practicing these skills, early and often, is proven to promote mental health and academic success.

Kristen Perrotti, founder of Be Well with SEL, LLC partners with schools and families to provide whole class and small group SEL lessons, including anxiety management, anger management, self-regulation, social skills, friendship skills, self-esteem, school readiness and more. Students who participate in her lessons will learn tools and strategies to manage their emotions and behavior in an appropriate manner.

Research confirms and school staff agree: Social and emotional competencies can be taught, modeled, and practiced, and lead to positive student outcomes that are important for success in school and in life. Students who participate in SEL programs show increased academic performance, improved classroom behavior, higher ability to manage stress and depression, and better attitudes about themselves, others, and school.

5 Core Competencies of SEL
adapted from CASEL
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) there are five broad and interrelated areas of SEL competence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The CASEL 5 can be taught and applied at various developmental stages from childhood to adulthood and across diverse cultural contexts. Many school districts, states, and countries have used the CASEL 5 to establish preschool to high school learning standards and competencies that articulate what students should know and be able to do for academic success, school and civic engagement, health and wellness, and fulfilling careers. As children master these competencies, they develop concern for others, make good choices, and take responsibility for their behaviors.
